SoFi's stablecoin buys its way into Kraken
SoFi links its bank-grade dollar rails and SoFiUSD stablecoin to Kraken, trading listing access for round-the-clock settlement plumbing.

SoFi Technologies and Kraken parent Payward are wiring their businesses together. Kraken will list SoFiUSD and plug into SoFi's around-the-clock dollar settlement network, while Kraken Prime becomes a liquidity source for SoFi's crypto customers.
The mechanics of the swap
The deal is a straight trade of access. SoFi gets an exchange with deep order books; Kraken gets a bank-chartered settlement rail that never sleeps.
That rail is the scarce asset here. Most stablecoin issuers rent settlement from a handful of banks. SoFi already runs its own bank.
The numbers behind the deal
- SoFi holds a national bank charter, one of a small number of crypto-adjacent firms with that status, per Decrypt.
- Kraken Prime will now execute trades for SoFi's crypto customer base, per the same announcement.
- SoFiUSD becomes listed for both retail and institutional Kraken customers under the pact.
- The deal covers three separate legs: the SoFi Exchange Network connection, the stablecoin listing, and the Prime liquidity arrangement.
Why the bank charter is the real asset
Coverage will frame this as another exchange adding another stablecoin, one more ticker on a long list. The charter detail says otherwise.
SoFi isn't selling Kraken a coin. It's selling Kraken a settlement pipe that runs on bank rails, not on a blockchain bridge or a correspondent bank's cutoff times.
Kraken has spent years building crypto-native infrastructure. What it lacks is a regulated dollar leg that clears outside banking hours. SoFi's charter fixes that gap in one signed agreement.
For SoFi, the payoff is distribution. A stablecoin is only as useful as the venues that list it and the volume that moves through it. Kraken hands SoFiUSD both, plus a liquidity desk in Kraken Prime that SoFi's own crypto customers can now route through.
Neither side needed to build what the other already had. That's the actual trade, not a stablecoin listing announcement dressed up as one.
What confirms or breaks the read
- SoFiUSD trading volume on Kraken in its first full quarter listed, versus other bank-issued stablecoins on the exchange.
- Whether SoFi discloses settlement volume moving through the SoFi Exchange Network via Kraken in a coming 10-Q or investor update.
- Any additional exchange signing onto SoFi's settlement network in the next two quarters, which would confirm the rail itself is the product being sold.
