October erased a quarter's worth of Ether ETF inflows in three weeks.

US spot Ether ETFs have shed $1.08 billion since October 1, already the largest monthly outflow of 2026 with eight trading sessions still left. The withdrawals wiped out September's $832 million in net inflows and left Ether funds with roughly $485 million in net inflows for the entire year.

The flow numbers

Bitcoin ETFs, by contrast, are barely dented. The split between the two assets this month is wide enough to call a divergence, not a crypto-wide retreat.

  • Ether ETFs lost $1.08 billion net in October, the worst month since November 2025, per SoSoValue data.
  • Ether fell 9.7% in October, from $2,700 to $2,438, and is down nearly 18% year-to-date, per CoinGecko.
  • Bitcoin ETFs show about $67 million in net outflows for October, a rounding error against Ether's drain.
  • Bitcoin ETFs took in $527 million on Monday and another $23 million Tuesday, per SoSoValue.
  • Bitcoin is down 2.2% since October 1 and 5.3% year-to-date, holding up far better than Ether.

Ether's outflow problem

The obvious read is that crypto ETFs are in a risk-off month and both assets are getting sold. The numbers don't back that story.

Bitcoin ETFs are flat on the month. Ether ETFs are down over a billion dollars net, and the September gains are gone.

That's not systemic de-risking. That's capital picking a side.

Ether ETFs bled $1.08 billion against Ether's 9.7% price drop. Bitcoin ETFs lost $67 million against a milder 2.2% decline.

The price moves don't explain the flow gap on their own. Something about Ether-specific positioning, likely leveraged basis trades or staking-yield products unwinding, is doing more damage than the spot price alone would suggest.

Year-to-date, Ether ETFs sit at $485 million net inflows versus Bitcoin's $809 million. Both funds launched with hype about institutional adoption. Bitcoin's holding its ground. Ether's giving back most of a year's work in three weeks.

What comes next

The next few data points will show whether this is a correction or a structural re-rating of Ether as an ETF product.

  • Whether October closes with outflows exceeding $1.1 billion, which would make it the worst month since Ether ETFs launched in 2024.
  • Whether Ether's price stabilizes above $2,400 even as outflows continue, which would separate the ETF story from the spot story.
  • Whether Bitcoin ETF inflows accelerate past the $527 million single-day mark seen Monday, confirming the capital rotation thesis.
