Deutsche Bank's crypto custody, on a timer

Deutsche Bank expects an October MiCA license for crypto custody, joining a queue of German banks already live.

The license is the product. The custody is just the paperwork behind it.

Deutsche Bank told Cointelegraph it expects a MiCA custody license in October and plans to onboard its first institutional clients this year. The offering covers Bitcoin, Ether and a short list of stablecoins, with tokenized instruments slated for later.

The MiCA queue

This isn't Deutsche Bank moving early. It's Deutsche Bank catching up to smaller German rivals who already cleared the same regulatory bar.

  • Deutsche Bank first announced custody plans in 2023, via a partnership with Taurus, and is only now nearing a license three years later. Cointelegraph
  • Landesbank Baden-Württemberg, Germany's largest federal bank, launched crypto custody in April 2024 with Bitpanda, 18 months ahead of Deutsche Bank.
  • DZ Bank got BaFin authorization under MiCA for its meinKrypto platform in December 2025, beating the country's largest commercial bank to market.
  • MiCA reached full enforcement across the EU on July 1, setting one licensing clock for every bank now filing.
  • The initial asset list is narrow: BTC, ETH, plus USDC, EURC and AllUnity EUR, with tokenized securities pushed to a later phase.

Deutsche Bank's position

The default read will call this Germany's biggest bank finally entering crypto. The sequencing says something sharper: Deutsche Bank is the slowest of the three major German custody launches, not the first.

LBBW and DZ Bank already have live platforms and paying clients. Deutsche Bank is still waiting on a license it applied for years ago, for a product scoped down to two coins and three stablecoins.

Size isn't speed here. A G-SIB with Deutsche Bank's balance sheet and compliance apparatus took longer to clear MiCA than a regional bank and a cooperative lender.

That gap is the real signal. It points to internal risk sign-off, not technology, as the binding constraint on institutional crypto rollout at systemically important banks.

The stablecoin list matters too. Circle's USDC and EURC sit alongside AllUnity's EURAU, a euro stablecoin backed by DWS and Flow Traders, not a Deutsche Bank product.

Deutsche Bank is building the pipes for other issuers' coins before it decides whether to issue its own. Sabih Behzad, the bank's digital assets lead, said in June the bank was still considering issuing a stablecoin.

Custody first, issuance later, if at all, is the sequencing. That's a bank hedging its own stablecoin ambitions by first proving it can hold everyone else's.

What confirms the read

  • Whether the October license actually arrives on schedule, or slips again past a 2023 original target.
  • Whether Deutsche Bank announces its own stablecoin before or after the custody platform goes live with clients.
  • Client count and asset volume in the first reporting period after launch, versus LBBW's or DZ Bank's disclosed early numbers.
