US spot Bitcoin ETFs took in $102.7 million on Thursday, the first trading day of October, reversing a $148.7 million outflow the session before. Ether ETFs went the other way, shedding $55.4 million for a third consecutive day of redemptions.

The flow split

The headline number is small next to what came before it. Bitcoin funds had just closed out their strongest quarter of the year, and the October bounce looks more like a pause ending than a new trend starting.

  • Bitcoin ETFs posted $102.7 million in net inflows on Oct. 1, per SoSoValue data cited by Cointelegraph.
  • That followed $148.7 million in outflows the prior day, a same-week reversal.
  • Combined Bitcoin ETF net assets stand at $109.3 billion, with $57.6 billion in cumulative net inflows since launch.
  • Q3 alone brought in $6.34 billion, including $2.65 billion in September, as Bitcoin gained 42.71% over the quarter.
  • Ether ETFs lost $55.4 million Thursday, bringing the three-day outflow total to about $118 million.

Solana ETFs extended their own losing streak to two sessions, down roughly $6 million. XRP funds were the outlier, pulling in $4 million.

What the split actually says

The obvious read treats $103 million as proof that "Uptober" optimism is back across crypto ETFs. The numbers argue for something narrower: capital rotated back into Bitcoin specifically, not into the asset class broadly.

Ether's three-day bleed of $118 million is happening at the same time Bitcoin flips positive, not despite it. That's not noise. It's allocators choosing Bitcoin and trimming Ether in the same week, which looks like a relative-value call rather than a risk-on wave lifting everything.

The scale also matters. $103 million against $57.6 billion in cumulative Bitcoin ETF inflows is a rounding error, not a signal. One day's flip doesn't offset a quarter where Bitcoin ETFs took in $6.34 billion while price ran up 42.71%; Thursday's number is a return to baseline, not a resumption of September-style buying.

Sentiment backs that reading rather than fighting it. The Fear & Greed Index actually slipped, from 74 to 72, even as Bitcoin ETFs turned positive and price ticked up 2.1%. Greed is cooling while flows stabilize, which is consistent with a market that paused and is now idling, not one that's re-accelerating.

The Ether outflows deserve their own scrutiny rather than a footnote. Three straight days of redemptions, totaling $118 million, is a longer and more consistent pattern than Bitcoin's single-day flip. If anything is trending right now, it's Ether funds losing ground, and that's the part getting buried under the "Uptober" framing.

What to watch

  • Whether Bitcoin ETF inflows sustain above $100 million for three or more consecutive sessions, which would mark a real trend rather than a one-day reversal.
  • Whether Ether ETF outflows extend past a fourth and fifth day, confirming a structural rotation rather than a short pause.
  • Whether the Fear & Greed Index climbs back above 74 as flows move, which would show sentiment and capital moving together again instead of diverging.
